Member Services and Overview and Scrutiny

Member Services performs the following roles:

  • Managing the County Council's political decision-making processes (including direct support to the Executive and Scrutiny functions).
  • Supporting members in carrying out their community and representational roles.
  • Providing administrative and other support for certain external bodies such as the Cumbria Sea Fisheries Committee and the School Organisation Committee.
  • Undertaking as 'Proper Officer' the management of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages and HM Coroners Services.
  • Supporting the Chief Executive, as Clerk to the Lieutenancy, in assisting the Lord-Lieutenant in his official and ceremonial duties, including his role as Chairman of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Magistrates.                

Overview and Scrutiny can best be described as the County Council's watchdog.  Non-executive members can challenge the decisions of the Executive, undertake reviews of performance, policies, services and partnerships.
