Plans to improve care services in Barrow-in-Furness agreed

In response to the consultation, Cumbria County Council's Cabinet agreed the following recommendations on the 14 October 2010:

  • Expansion of intensive home care services
  • Provide 28 units of extra care at Holker Street
  • Build a new 60 bed "state of the art" home built to dementia standards (the two potential sites are Park View School and land next to Abbey Meadow)
  • Close four existing care homes (West Point House, Rock Lea, George Basterfield and Bevan House).

Cabinet also agreed the timescales for the home closures:

West Point House - to close 2011 (by end of March)
George Basterfield House - 2011 (by end of December)
Bevan House - 2013 (on opening of the new care home, approximately Spring)
Rock Lea - 2013 (on opening of the new care home, approximately Spring)

Work is now progressing to implement the recommendations and move to modernised services in Barrow in Furness.

Background to the consultation process

This consultation sought views on proposals for the types of care services Cumbria County Council would like to see provided in Barrow-in-Furness in the future.

The proposals include expanding intensive home care services to more people and continuing work with other agencies in the area on the development of extra care housing schemes.

For those people who are no longer able to stay at home and require specialist care, such as people with dementia, we want to provide excellent services in modern buildings that meet people’s expectations.

We would like to see a brand new residential care home that specialises in services for people with dementia.  We are already very excited about this development which will provide people in Barrow-in-Furness with one of the best facilities in the country.

We need to act now to develop new services for the future and we are delighted to share with you in the consultation document our ideas for making major improvements in care and support for older people in the Barrow-in-Furness area.

These ideas have largely come from the work of a local Barrow district working group made up of local representatives. We however want to engage as many people as possible in contributing to the ideas and developing solutions that reflect the hopes and aspirations of local people.

The consultation process ran from 1 April to 30 June 2010.
