What is a carers direct payment?

Carers direct payments are cash payments given to carers, as opposed to the person being cared for. Carers can use their direct payments to buy services or goods for themselves which have been assessed as necessary via their carers support plan, to help them to continue to care - these might include gym membership, other recreational services, a short term break or a practical piece of equipment such as a washing machine. Carers direct payments are paid by the local authority instead of social care services.

Who can get carers direct payment?

Carers aged 16 or over who are providing regular and substantial care to somebody.

Is the carer direct payment a new benefit?

The money is not an extra benefit or income and it will not be taken into account as income for other benefits.

How do I go about obtaining a carer direct payment?

To receive a carers direct payment you will need a carer’s assessment via a formal discussion between yourself and the care manager or social worker. The assessment will focus on the support you need as a carer, not the needs of person you care for.

What will happen during the carers assessment?

The care service that you provide will be discussed in detail during your carers assessment and the main points will be highlighted on a carers assessment form with action points clearly outlined on a carers support plan. Your care manager or social worker will then discuss if a carers direct payment is an option.

Do I need to do anything once I receive a carers direct payment?

You must keep any receipts for goods or services bought using carers direct payment money for review by Cumbria County Council.
