This booklet has been produced by the Cumbria User and Carer Consortium. It is the result of work with over 1500 people across Cumbria. They wish to share their thoughts on best practice, resulting from their experiences of receiving care and support services.
The booklet is influenced by the 2007 Joseph Rowntree Foundation report, also entitled Standards We Expect.
Carers and people with support needs are aware that life is never perfect and that service providers and staff do face challenges. In the words of one service user, “Realistically, there are not the resources to give everyone everything that they want.”
This booklet is, however, a chance for service users to outline the five principles or standards that staff and service providers should strive to achieve. Each of the standards identifies ways in which to improve practice. Not all of the suggestions here-in are easy to achieve but to omit them due to that reason would be to deny their existence.
It is, we hope, to be used as a benchmark for service delivery; an outline of the five most important things to be borne in mind when working with people who use care and support services: accessibility, communication, development, empowerment and respect.
