What is day care?

This is the definition of day care we are using to decide which day services we will charge for.

Day care is a service purchased by the county council.   It is a service provided during the day and/or during the evening usually away from a person’s own home on a sessional rather than hourly basis and which aims to help them to live as independently as possible.   In addition, it may provide support to carers by allowing them to have a break. These services may include:

  • group or one-to-one support;
  • the provision of advice and information;
  • therapeutic support; and
  • activities of a practical, social, personal or educational nature that satisfy social, cultural, religious and recreational interests and needs.

For the purposes of charging, day care service is defined as:

A service provided in a day centre, another venue in the community, which may be a public or specialised centre or any other setting away from a persons home and which forms part of a care plan. This will be provided on a sessional basis where a “session” is a block of time up to three hours duration. Any time in excess of this will be regarded as two sessions and normally a day care place will include two sessions. Where a meal is purchased, time used to consume the meal will be included in the duration of the session. Time spent travelling to and from the session will not be included in the duration of the session.

For the purpose of charging, day care services will not  include the following:

  • Short term rehabilitation and recovery of up to 6 weeks (irrespective of the number of sessions in this time).   Rehabilitation is a separate service with a maximum number of sessions with defined measurable outcomes, review points, and an anticipated end date.
  • Services wholly funded by the Health Service.
  • Employment based services administered outside of a day service where the aim is to support users in a working environment and which forms part of a joint care plan.
  • Services where people attend on a “drop-in” basis whereby the dates of attendance are not planned in advance and not detailed as part of the care plan.
