What do occupational therapists do?

Skip main menu

We discuss with you what you are able to do and also what you find difficult.  We will advise you on different ways in which your needs can be met. This is called an assessment and this will be different for each individual.  We will  involve you in your assessment and encourage you to tell us what help you think you need.  If you have a carer who helps you, we can involve them too.

We will use a range of methods for carrying out an assessment of your needs:

  • The assessment may be undertaken following a detailed discussion with you by telephone.   If the difficulties you are experiencing are straightforward this may be an appropriate way of providing the information and support you need.
  • You may also be offered an assessment appointment where you can visit our team and receive advice, information and services as appropriate.

  • In some circumstances the assessment will take place in your home environment, particularly if your needs appear to be more complex or you experience significant problems travelling beyond your home.

Once we have assessed your needs we will determine if you are eligible for free services under the Fair Access to Care Services eligibility framework.   Services will be provided if your needs are considered either “Critical” or “Substantial”.
