Why have an online directory of services?

The Cumbria Support Directory will enable individuals and professionals to access information about the full range of services and support available in Cumbria.  This will include universal and community services alongside traditional social care services.  The directory will enable people to find out about the range of options open to them including some they may not have considered.  It will:

  • support customer choice and control and use of personal budgets;

  • support prevention, telling people about universal and community services;

  • be a valuable tool for practitioners and information services; and

  • give service providers a place to promote their services.

About the Cumbria Support Directory

The directory will aim to include details about the full range of services available in Cumbria including: social care and support, health and well being, housing, leisure, learning, employment, money matters, advice and information, transport, equipment and carers’ support.

The online directory will enable:

  • 24/7 online access to information about the full range of services;

  • providers to maintain information about their services with automated reminders to ensure this is kept up to date;

  • users to search for services by name, user group, age, need, service type, location and key word and can then create ‘my services’ lists which can be printed off or emailed.

For those who do not have internet access, the online directory will be available through practitioners, prevention and advice organisations, relatives and friends, Libraries, Local Links and the council’s contact centre.

Implementing the Cumbria Support Directory

A prototype directory was developed which used existing information about organisations held by Adult Social Care.  You can see this at: http://search3.openobjects.com/kb5/cumbria/asch/home.pagethis external link will open in a new window.

The prototype was subject to consultation at the end of 2011. Over 100 responses were received, almost all were positive with helpful suggestions for improvement.

The prototype is currently being amended to include improvements suggested in the consultation feedback.  We expect to have the final version ready for use by the end of May 2012.

What happens next?

During April 2012, we are contacting all the organisations on our existing database asking them to confirm if they would like to be included on the new online directory.

  • Organisations confirming they would like to be included will provide an email address which will be used as the log in when updating their information on the directory.

  • The details of organisations confirming they do not wish to go onto the directory will be deleted.

Once the final version of the directory has been agreed (expected to be June 2012), we will contact all organisations who have asked to be included on the directory.  We will give them details of how they can log in and update their records.

Go Live

We will allow a month for organisations to update their records before the official ‘go live’.  We will then promote the directory widely to people and organisations who may want to use it or include details of their services.
