Project Update: end April 2009
During April, the restoration of Lady Gillford’s House has continued. The key work has been the installation of new mechanical and electrical services to enable a modern, high tech use of the building. This work has been carried out under the supervision of a Conservation Architect to ensure that it is done in a way that is appropriate for a Grade II* historic building. Refurbishment of external windows has also started.
In the new extension, the reinforced concrete structure for the ground floor of the archives strongroom is now largely in place, and the retaining wall at the south of the site has been started.
During the course of May, work will focus on internal restoration of doors and windows, the selection of an authentic interior décor, and the replacement of defective stonework in the historic building. The construction of the strongroom will continue, and a start will be made on the steelwork frame for the public access space.
Despite some initial delays with site set-up (and helped by unseasonably good Cumbrian weather!) the project remains running to programme at the end of April, and is on budget.
