We are looking for volunteers at Kendal Archive Centre to help us computerise the Sydney Smith Marriage Index. This is such a valuable resource: over a number of years, Mr Smith, with other contributors, aimed to list all known Westmorland and Furness Marriages between 1700 and 1837. Although it is not quite complete, nearly 100 parishes are included and the index contains over 40,000 marriage slips. This is where we need you, as we’d love to make this more widely available but the first step is entering the information into Excel.
Can you help? We are looking for volunteers with their own laptops, preferably with Excel 2003 on it, who can enter in the marriage details and, at the end of each session, send it to the Archives in order to update the central database. We’d also welcome for volunteers who’d be interested in photographing or scanning the slips so that they could be emailed out to other volunteers who do not live locally to put the information on Excel in the same way.
If you would like to contribute, either with the marriage project or a future project, we will be happy to take some details, discuss your availability and how you can help us. Please contact Claire Hooson at Kendal Archive Centre on 01539 713540 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
