Revised Opening Hours - Barrow Archive and Local Studies Centre

We have revised our opening hours with effect from 12 March 2012:

  • Mondays: We will be closed EVERY Monday.

We are making this adjustment due to a reduction in staffing and are now closed every Monday, until further notice. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. 

Please note our opening times will remain otherwise unaffected, and offer you these alternative visiting times:

  • Saturdays: We will be offering a full archives and local studies service on the first Saturday of every month (10.00–13.00, 14.00–16.00)
  • Wednesdays: The Office will continue to open one evening a week and this will be on Wednesdays until 7pm (9.30 – 13.00, 14.00–19.00). Original archive sources will be available until 17.00; Local Studies and searchroom sources only 17.00-19:00.
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: We will be offering a full archives and local studies service (9.30 – 13.00, 14.00–17.00)

There are a number of reasons for these reduced opening hours:

  • Due to budget reductions and vacancies our staffing levels have fallen, and we need to concentrate available staff resources to ensure we can run an efficient and helpful public service.
  • Analysis of our Saturday opening has revealed a low level of use by visitors when we open every Saturday.  We will offer a less frequent Saturday service, but a better level of service, with all the archives and local studies collections being available for use on the 1st Saturday of the month.

Don’t forget that when we are closed, you can still make use of CASCAT: the Cumbria Archive Service on-line catalogue. We are constantly adding new information to our catalogue and we are increasing the stock of digital images of original archives.

Saturday: 10.00–1.00, 2.00–4.00
Monday: Closed
Tuesday – Friday: 9.30 – 1.00, 2.00 – 5.00
Wednesday evening: Local Studies and searchroom sources only 5.00 -7.00pm

Weeks 2-4
Monday: Closed
Tuesday – Friday: 9.30 – 1.00, 2.00 – 5.00
Wednesday evening: Local Studies and searchroom sources only 5.00 -7.00pm

We will be OPEN on the following Saturdays in early 2013: 5th January, 2nd February, 2nd March, 6th April, 11th May, 1st June.
