It is with regret that the Cumbria Record Office and Local Studies Library in Whitehaven reduced its opening hours with effect from 1 August 2005.
Long term staff illness and other staffing levels have made it impossible to sustain the previous level of service to which our customers have become accustomed. During 2005 we investigated every possibility to temporarily maintain staffing levels but exhausted all the options and therefore we had no alternative but to reduce the opening hours in order to try to ensure that standards of service are sustained. The hours of opening will be altered on a temporary basis, as outlined below, until further notice.
The office will be:
- Closed for lunch every lunch time 12:30-1:30pm
- Reducing Saturday service to one in two Saturday mornings
We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and thank our customers for their forbearance.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:30am - 12:30pm 1:30pm - 5:00pm
Wednesday 9:30am - 12:30pm 1:30pm - 7:00pm
Saturday 9:00am - 1:00pm Every other week as advised
Open on the following Saturdays, May-Aug 2008:
10 May, 24 May, 7 June, 21 June, 5 July, 19 July, 2 August, 16 August, 30 August.
