Leader
The Leader approach is a mechanism for delivering rural development programmes in a ‘bottom-up’ way, focusing on the local area and local organisations. It has been delivered successfully in Cumbria since 1997.
What is the Rural Development Programme?
The Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) is a new package of funds aimed at stimulating rural development. The Programme will run from 2009 until 2013 with around £8 million available for the Cumbria Fells and Dales area.
The RDPE is jointly funded by the Government and the EU through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The Regional Development Agencies have been charged with managing the delivery of the RDPE and, in Cumbria, it is delivered by Cumbria County Council through two Local Action Groups covering the Cumbria Fells and Dales and the Solway, Border and Eden area. These areas are shown on the map below; the Fells and Dales region in green and the Solway, Border and Eden in gray.
Who is it meant to benefit?
• Farmers, farming families and foresters.
• Local farming organisations such as cooperative groups.
• Other eligible businesses operating in rural areas.
• Locally based voluntary organisations and community groups.
• Local partnerships such as market town partnerships, community planning groups or similar.
