Coastal Park, Maryport

Skip main menu

The aim of the project was to increase public accessibility to an area of 35 hectares of Coastal Park from the south of the Harbour to Forthergill though improvements to footpaths and constructing a new cycle path. The area was previously underused and included an old coal wash site which ceased operation in 1993 and is of a neglected appearance.

As a result of this investment, the Costal Park is now enjoyed by local people and tourists alike. It is hoped that the improvements will help towards Maryport being a third point for cyclists starting or ending their Coast to Coast (C2C) journey as well as improving the section of the Hadrian Cycle Route which passes through the town. This in turn would benefit the local economy through increased demand for accommodation and local services.

Project highlights

  • 2.1km of cycleway was upgraded from the existing crushed stone surface to tarmac.
  • 2.4km of footpath was upgraded from existing crushed stone paths.
  • The existing car park at the entrance to Hutton Place Road was improved to provide 14 car parking spaces.
  • The opening of the tunnel underneath the railway at the southern end of the site enabling access to the Coastal Park on foot, cycle or via wheelchair use from Flimby.
