Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)

Information, advice and guidance (IAG) is critically important to the success of 14-19 reform.

Increased curriculum flexibility, new qualifications and expansion of progression routes, emphasis upon personalised learning and planning; all add up to mean more choice at a younger age.

IAG helps young people to make sense of the options and opportunities, make well-informed, sustainable choices and plan their future in work and learning.  IAG also encompasses the personal issues that may affect young people such as health, relationships, money and rights.

Young people receive information, advice and guidance through a variety of channels; from their family and friends, tutors, Connexions advisers and others.

From 2008, Local Authorities working through children’s trust arrangements will be responsible for commissioning IAG for young people.  New national quality standards are being developed to ensure that all young people receive high quality and impartial IAG to help them make the most of their opportunities.
