Adoption

Skip main menu

Adoption is a legal process by which children become permanent members of a new family. Parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters. Adopted children lose all legal ties to their birth parents.

However it will be important for the children to keep some contact with someone from their birth background, usually by exchanging letters and photographs each year.

Adoption is different from Fostering. A child may be fostered because birth parents are unable to provide care. Foster carers have special training and support from the Fostering Team. After a time in foster care, many children return to their birth parents, although some go on to be adopted.

Cumbria Children’s Services provide for all three sides of adoption:

  • Children who need a family to give them a permanent home
  • Adoptive families who will make a lifelong commitment
  • Birth families who suffer stress and separation through adoption.

These pages explain how the Adoption Service works in Cumbria. We will welcome you to contact us if you live in Cumbria and are:

  • Someone who is thinking about adopting a child
  • An adopter with a young family or teenagers
  • A birth family member concerned that a child may go for adoption
  • A young person who has been adopted
  • An adult wanting to know more about your adoption and birth background
  • A family member seeking an adult who was adopted out of your family.

If one of these is you, there is a page here for you, with information and details of how to contact Cumbria’s Adoption Service.
