It is a legal process by which children, who cannot be brought up by their own parents, become a full and permanent member of a new family. Parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters. Adopted children lose all legal ties to their birth parents- however letters and photographs may be exchanged and in some cases it will be important for the children to keep contact with someone indefinitely.
