Cumbria Reading Intervention is now an essential part of the Primary National Strategy in Cumbria. It is used as an individualised intervention after other, less intensive, approaches have not resulted in significant progress.
Since September 1994, over 600 teachers and teaching assistants in Cumbria have been trained to use the Cumbria Reading Intervention procedures.
Over 80% of Cumbrian schools now have at least one Cumbria Reading Intervention trained member of staff.
16 Cumbria Reading Intervention training courses have taken place in Cumbria; demand for places on the courses remains high.
Trained Cumbria Reading Intervention staff have worked with children aged between 5 years 6 months and 15 years 3 months.
Training for participants and support for schools are provided by a team of nine Specialist Advisory Literacy Teachers, an Educational Psychologist and dedicated administrative support.
The Cumbria Reading Intervention team have also worked closely with colleagues from Rochdale to develop their capacity to deliver the programme in Rochdale schools.
