I am a parent/guardian of a child with literacy difficulties. I would like him/her to have Cumbria Reading Intervention in school. (enquirer from outside Cumbria)
At the moment the one-to-one one Cumbria Reading Intervention programme is available only in Cumbria and Rochdale. North Yorkshire has also developed a small group version of the intervention. If you are worried about your child’s progress, in the first instance you might wish to discuss this with your child’s school, or contact your local authority (LA) for advice about support available in your area.

The Cumbria Reading Intervention programme is used with those children who have the most significant literacy difficulties and who are in the beginning stages of learning to read and write. Children who take part in the programme will have had previous support in school, for example regular small group activities, or additional individual support, before they can be considered for the Cumbria Reading Intervention programme. If you are concerned about your child’s progress you may wish to discuss this with your child’s teacher, or the school special educational needs coordinator. If necessary they can then seek advice from other professionals.

Cumbria Reading Intervention teachers and teaching assistants are trained to work in Cumbrian schools. We do not maintain a list of trained staff who are willing to work privately. All staff who have passed the training course will hold a Cumbria Reading Intervention Teaching Certificate.
I am a teacher/teaching assistant and would like to book a place on a Cumbria Reading Intervention training course. (enquirer from outside Cumbria)
The Cumbria Reading Intervention training course is demanding and intensive: because of this a high level of regular tutor support is needed for delegates, some of which has to be provided in your own school/setting. Because of the demands of travelling time that this would create, Cumbrian tutors are not able to work with individual delegates from outside Cumbria. However, if a group of teachers (6-8) within a geographical area wished to work with the support of their local LA to develop the intervention in their area, with the ultimate aim of the LA delivering the intervention independently, then it may be possible to negotiate this.

The next Cumbria Reading Intervention course in Cumbria is due to begin in September 2006. All of the places on this course have been allocated and there is a considerable waiting list. The course runs for 6 months. The next course is likely to begin in September 2007. Details will be advertised to schools during the summer term of next year.
I am a teacher/parent and would like to buy a copy of the Cumbria Reading Intervention programme for use in my school/at home.
The Cumbria Reading Intervention programme is not a scripted programme or a particular scheme of work. Each programme is unique and devised for the specific needs of an individual child. The programme can only be delivered after appropriate and intensive training. We are not therefore able to provide a pack of materials for use by teachers or parents without this training.
At present training to deliver the Cumbria Reading Intervention programme is available for schools (teachers and teaching assistants) in Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Rochdale. There is no training course for parents. Cumbria is willing to work with other LAs to discuss options for making the programme available locally in their area. We unfortunately do not have the capacity to deliver the training to individual staff or schools.
