What Happens during a Cumbria Reading Intervention Session
During each 35-minute Cumbria Reading Intervention session a trained member of staff works with one child to deliver a highly individualised intervention programme. The programme is usually carried out in a quiet area in the school. The following activities are included: -
- Reading easy books (books that the child can read with 95-100% accuracy);
- Reading a book at instructional level (90-94% accuracy), whilst a detailed record of their reading accuracy and reading strategies is made;
- Practising letter recognition and formation;
- Completing oral phonological activities;
- Writing a sentence or short story;
- Cutting up the sentence/story and re-arranging it;
- Introducing a new book which is at an appropriate level of difficulty for the child;
- Supporting the child's attempt to read the new book;
- Re-reading the new book with the member of staff.
