What Happens during a Cumbria Reading Intervention Session

During each 35-minute Cumbria Reading Intervention session a trained member of staff works with one child to deliver a highly individualised intervention programme.   The programme is usually carried out in a quiet area in the school.   The following activities are included: -

  • Reading easy books (books that the child can read with 95-100% accuracy);

  • Reading a book at instructional level (90-94% accuracy), whilst a detailed record of their reading accuracy and reading strategies is made;

  • Practising letter recognition and formation;

  • Completing oral phonological activities;

  • Writing a sentence or short story;

  • Cutting up the sentence/story and re-arranging it;

  • Introducing a new book which is at an appropriate level of difficulty for the child;

  • Supporting the child's attempt to read the new book;

  • Re-reading the new book with the member of staff.
