Children's residential care - What is it?

Cumbria County Council aims to provide a range of services which promote the ability of young people to:

  • live in or near their community of origin,
  • experience and grow up in family settings,
  • maintain social relationships and
  • use ordinary educational provision

so as to grow up as responsible citizens with good life chances.

The council's services offer care for children and young people in a range of settings including:

  • respite care in residential homes;
  • short term (up to 6 month) and longer terms in residential homes; and
  • shared care;
  • foster care; and
  • adoption.

Children's residential care provides care for children and young people in residential homes.  Staff in children's residential care work closely with children and young people, birth parents and other family members, shared carers, foster carers and other agencies to enable young people’s integration into communities, families and independent living.

Children's residential care also aims to promote life chances for children with disabilities so that they can achieve their maximum potential and are socially included.  As children with disabilities are often disadvantaged, the care actively seeks out ways of overcoming such disadvantage and promotes positive images of children with disabilities in the local community.
