Across the country, there is a trend of falling pupil numbers in primary and secondary schools, and the decline is expected to continue for at least the next 20 years. In Cumbria, about one quarter of school places will become empty over the next decade.
It is very important that we plan for the future to ensure we have the correct number and type of schools and that they are the right size and in the right locations. To try to make sure that this happens, Cumbria County Council launched a thorough review of all of the schools in the county in Autumn 2005. The review will look at all nursery, primary, secondary and special schools, as well as other services for children such as Pupil Referral Units and extended schools.
This review is also giving us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve young people's education and life choices, and we want to embrace this chance. We hope that this website will explain the overall process and give ongoing information as the project develops. The dedicated School Organisation Project Team will update this site regularly during the review period.
