Barrow and Dalton Secondary Update

The Furness Local Partnership Group decided to form a small Working Group to study relevant data in detail, and this group are working on a range of possible options for secondary education in Barrow & Dalton.   Soft options were developed by the full LPG and approved by SOF.  The County Council's Cabinet approved these options on 28 November 2006, and public consultation will take place in the New Year.  For a list of the schools being considered by this working group please follow the link below.

Barrow Academy Site Location

The County Council's Cabinet agreed on Monday 1st September 2008 that there should be a further consultation in Barrow on the proposed Academy. The consultation will be limited to whether the new school should be located permanently on just the Parkview site or both the Parkview and Thorncliffe sites.

The likely timescale for the consultation process will be;

  • 1 October               Distribution of the consultation document
  • 15-29 October         Meetings and other consultation events
  • 21 November           Deadline for the receipt of responses to the consultation

Following the consultation exercise the Council's Cabinet is likely to take a decision on whether the potential Academy should have one or two campuses at its meeting to be held on 6 January 2009.

Planning for the Academy is underway. It was always the intention for the new school to use both the Parkview and Thorncliffe sites for the first three years. This being the case, 1 September 2009 remains the date on which the Academy is scheduled to open. Planning details of how the Academy will operate, including its policies and curriculum, will continue alongside consultation on its location.
