Children`s Centres - for Providers

Quality assurance and strategic support for Children's Centres in Cumbria is led by the Learning Improvement Service through an annual cycle which may involve the following:

- Observations of practice
- Audits of plans and resources
- Impact based self-evaluations
- Liaison with key teams to jointly quality assure elements of practice
- Verification against Ofsted schedule
- Evaluation of post-Ofsted plan


Children's Centres work with the Learning Improvement team to evaluate practice against the following criteria:

Agreed LevelCriteriaSupport package - to be agreed with Early Years Team Manager (LIS) and Children's Centre Strategic Lead (LIS)
UniversalPractice in this area is consistently strong and well evidenced.

Robust plans are in place to address any weaknesses/gaps and the centre is confident in being able to fulfil these.

Cross referencing to Ofsted grade descriptors indicates that this area of work is likely to contribute to a good/outstanding outcome.

Complete/agree action plan during visit.

Link adviser attends advisory board.

Link adviser continues with quarterly monitoring process.

Centre can access training programme (charges apply), EYFS clusters and SEND representatives to District Strategy groups.
TargetedGaps/weaknesses have been identified in the focus area.

Cross referencing to Ofsted grade descriptors indicated that this area of work is likely to contribute to a less than good outcome.

Or the centre has been judged by Ofsted to be RI.
Complete/agree action plan during visit, stating which actions will be led by the centre which will involve the EY/LIS team.

Each action point that involves EY?LIS team may require 1, 2 or 3 visits or may require delivery of training plus one follow up visit.

Link adviser continues with quarterly monitoring process.

Centre can access training programme (charges apply), EYFS clusters and SEND representative to District Strategy groups.
IntensiveSignificant gaps/weaknesses have been identified.  The centre would benefit from intensive support to address these.

Cross referencing to Ofsted grade descriptors indicates that this area of work is likely to contribute to a less than good outcome.

Or the centre has been judged by Ofsted to be inadequate.
Start action plan during visit, stating which actions will be led by the centre and which will involve the EY/LIS team or defer this until Strategic Improvement Meeting (SIM) is set up.

SIM is set up by CCSL in order to write, agree and monitor an action plan for intensive support - link adviser supports.

Each action point that involves EY/LIS team may require 1,2 or 3 visits or may require delivery of training plus one follow up visit - to be reviewed at each SIM.

Link adviser attends advisory board.

Link adviser continues with quarterly monitoring process.

Centre can access training programme (charges apply), EYFS clusters and SEND representatives to District Strategy groups.
