Learning Improvement Service - Primary

Skip main menu

The Learning Improvement Service provides challenge and support to 265 LA-maintained primary schools.  These schools vary in size from under 50 to over 400 pupils.  Standards in the schools have consistently exceeded the national average each year. Many curriculum and community projects have received national recognition.

Each school is allocated a Link General Adviser who monitors the school’s performance. They support its school improvement work and/or coordinate the brokering and deployment of further support for the school, where this is necessary or appropriate.  School support comes from the team of general advisers and primary support and intervention officers or from sources of school-to-school support including National and Local Leaders in Education or Leading Teachers.  The service also seeks to promote school cluster work and build networks between schools to share good practice.

General Advisers ensure that statutory duties in relation to assessment are carried out and they support schools in doing this. The service undertakes reviews of schools – both at the request of the Children’s Services Directorate and also at the direct request of schools.  In these cases we work in close partnership with the schools to ensure that the outcomes of the review provide clear judgements and recommendations for addressing any areas of development the school may have.

The service works in close partnership with other providers such as the National College of School Leadership and Cumbria Primary Heads’ Association. Such partnerships support school improvement, training and development and succession planning.
