Learning Improvement Service - Schools

The Learning Improvement Service, in partnership through CASL, provides challenge and support to 322 schools and academies.  These comprise six LA maintained nursery schools; 270 primary schools, of which 245 are LA maintained; 38 secondary schools, of which 15 are LA maintained; five special schools, of which four are LA maintained; and three Pupil Referral Units (PRUs).  These schools range from some very small and rurally-situated primary schools with fewer than 20 pupils and small secondary schools with around 100 students, to primary schools with over 400 pupils and secondary schools with in excess of 1,500 students.

Whilst the Cumbria Alliance of System Leaders (CASL) provides strategic oversight and governance for educational improvement, the real work of our developing system is achieved through the three locally-based operational groups, the Local Alliances of System Leaders (LASL).  These three active bodies operate in Allerdale and Copeland, Barrow and South Lakeland, and Carlisle and Eden.

The LASLs promote school cluster working and help to build networks between schools to share good practice.  Each cluster of schools is allocated a General Adviser (GA) as a point of contact.  For schools identified as requiring further support, generally identified as "Targeted" or "Intensive" support schools, a LIS GA is allocated to assist co-ordination and brokerage of appropriate support.  Support and, where appropriate, intervention in general is likely to come from a combination of resources, including LA officers and school-to-school working, including National and Local Leaders of Education, Specialist Leaders of Education or National Leaders of Governance as agreed through the LASLs.  Access to additional resource, available for example through the National College for Teaching and Leadership, is also strategically applied for through this mechanism with oversight through CASL.  The relevant Area Senior Adviser for each area provides the essential oversight, contact and leadership on behalf of the LA, working closely with the area LASL Chair.
