The Education Act 2011 changed the arrangements for establishing new schools and introduced section 6A (the academy/free school presumption) to the Education and Inspections Act 2006. Where a Local Authority thinks there is a need for a new school in its area it must seek proposals to establish an academy/free school.
Cumbria County Council identified the need for a new school within Workington, dependent on closure being agreed for two of the town's existing secondary schools. The current maximum capacity for Southfield Technology College is 987 and the current maximum capacity for Stainburn School and Science College is 966.
Cumbria County Council would like to invite interested parties to submit their expression of interest in becoming the academy sponsor of the new school, under the 'Academy Presumption' process.
