School Admissions - Types of school

Skip main menu

This information is important in understanding the process for applying for a school place.

Community and voluntary controlled schools – Cumbria County Council is the admissions authority for these schools.

Admissions policies include:

  • The “Published Admission Number” – this is the minimum number of pupils per year group that the school is required to admit. Unless this number has been reached you can not be refused a school place.
  • The criteria that will be used to determine who should be offered a school place when more parents apply then there are places available to offer. The most common criterion used is distance – that is the further from a school you live, the less likely you are to be offered a place at that school.

Foundation and voluntary aided schools and academies (including “free schools”) – the Governing Body for each school/academy is the admissions authority for these schools. This means that the Governing Body for each of these schools/academies is responsible for determining the admissions policy for these schools.

Information about all schools published admissions limit is available on the policies page.
