Youth Offending Services are at the forefront of the Government's agenda to reduce crime, particularly youth crime.  Set up under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, each Youth Offending Service must consist of representatives from the Police, Probation, Social Care, Health, and Education, and deliver co-ordinated Youth Justice services.

Cumbria Youth Offending Service has operational teams in:

Carlisle (covering Carlisle and Eden districts),
Maryport (covering Copeland and Allerdale districts) and
Barrow (covering Barrow and South Lakes District).

There is also a County Projects team based in Penrith, and the Service's Headquarters are in Carlisle.

The Service is made up of a partnership, funded by:

  • the County Council's former Social Services and Education departments (now called Children's Services),
  • Cumbria Constabulary,
  • the national Probation Service - Cumbria area,
  • Morecambe Bay PCT and
  • Eden Valley PCT (on behalf of the North Cumbria PCT's).

Other key partners that form the Youth Offending Service include Connexions Cumbria, Crown Prosecution Service, and HM Court Services.
