100 years on, women councillors call for greater equality

Some of Cumbria County Council's female councillors have called for more women to put themselves forward as councillors so that the make-up of the council reflects the wider Cumbrian population.

The call for action comes exactly 100 years since women could first stand for election as councillors (November 1st 1907).

To mark the centenary of women councillors in Britain, all of the county council's women councillors were asked the following questions:

  • What made you decide to become a councillor?
  • Who is your female role model and why?
  • Why is it important to have women councillors?
  • 100 years on what are the battles still to be fought?
