What made you decide to become a councillor?

No one else wanted the job! But I’ve always been interested in helping people with problems and have been a good listener. My father was a Westmorland County Councillor and my brother was a Cumberland County Councillor, so I suppose it’s in my blood.

Who is your female role model and why?

I haven’t got one. I like to do things my way, and that means working quietly on the sidelines and doing the best for my constituents by getting out and talking to them.

Why is it important to have women councillors?

I think women tend to be more practical and have more common sense in everyday matters. I like sorting out people’s problems.

100 years on what are the battles still to be fought?

I know there’s still some prejudice around, but I haven’t personally encountered any in my 15 years as a councillor. But I haven’t been ambitious to climb the political ladder, so perhaps I’m not seen as a threat.
