You said…   Help us co-ordinate a range of people and organisations to make our plans to redevelop the community centre a reality.

We did…   Brought together the county and borough council, councillors, the residents and community groups to create a community centre to be proud of.

Askam Community Centre has reopened following a major modernisation project with residents and community groups alike gathering for its official launch.

The Community Centre Committee, comprising county, parish and borough councillors, residents who use the hall and directors of the community centre have worked tirelessly together for two years on this renovation programme.

The County Council’s Community Unit Barrow Area Support Team have helped bring together a range of organisations to work on the project and supported the committee in navigating some of the legal aspects of the development.

The building is owned by Barrow Borough Council which has leased the building to the Community Centre Committee. The borough council has also provided the £250,000 funding which as made the project possible.

The project has seen the centre benefit from a new kitchen, warm and comfortable hall with under floor heating, meeting room with custom-built storage cupboards and a new extension for additional storage of larger equipment.

The structural eccentricities, legal queries and a requirement to maintain the heritage feel of the streetscape have all posed challenges during the renovation process.

Residents and community groups who use the hall, which include the line dancing group, karate club and Askam Youth Action are now looking forward to enjoying this improved facility for the village.

The building has been a prominent landmark on Duke Street and School Street since its foundation as the village school in 1873. The revamp has given the centre a new lease of life which will comfortably take the users and committee into the future with a modernised interior and exterior fit for the twenty-first century.
