Involving residents in developing new approaches to sustainable transport in the county is vital in ensuring that plans are practical and attractive to local people.
When the Highways team set about drawing up a Sustainable Transport Plan for the Kirkby Stephen area, they worked together with the Community Unit’s Eden Area Support Team to get to grips with residents’ views and experiences of walking, cycling and using public transport.
Whilst public meetings attracted a number of adult residents, the views of its young people were still much needed in making sure they feel safe when making their way around the area, particularly when travelling to and from school.
A fun lunchtime session with 21 year eight pupils from Kirkby Stephen Grammar School was organised, giving young people the opportunity to tell transport planners about changes that would make it safer and more convenient for them to get around.
Before the session pupils and teachers were promised that, although it would not be possible to implement all their suggestions, their valuable input would be sure to make a definite difference to sustainable transport in the Kirkby Stephen area. Amongst the many issues covered were their concerns about dark, unlit footpaths and the need for more crossings.
The comments from everyone involved in the consultation is currently helping shape the town’s sustainable transport plan and pupils and public will receive an update on priorities over the coming months.
Sustainable transport meetings are held across the county on a regular basis, giving residents the opportunity to give their experiences and suggestions for improving walking, cycling and using public transport around Cumbria. Their views are included in Sustainable Transport plans for their area which are part of a wide range of initiatives which are helping make the county greener.
