Active Communities Award

This award highlights groups or individuals who have helped make their communities healthier and more active.

Runner-up:  

The Next Generation has made a world of difference to one of Allerdale’s most deprived areas. Residents of Frostom’s estate, Workington, were sick and tired of the lack of community spirit in their area. Drink, drugs and antisocial behaviour made it a bleak place to live, with little to do for children or adults. When three women set up the Next Generation, it helped bring a broken community together. For the last five years, the project has provided fun, educational and sporting events for residents right across the age spectrum.

Winner:

Since February 2008, the On Your Bike scheme has helped 200 people in Denton Holme get off the beaten track. The project gives sheltered housing residents the chance to take part in organised bike rides, alongside local families. Homeless people, addicts and victims of domestic violence can all get fit and feel part of their community. Participants are given free cycle training and maintenance lessons, as well as secondhand bikes for those unable to afford their own. The scheme has improved community relations and given a healthy boost to their self esteem.
