Winner: Distington Club for Young People        Runner-up: Joan Martin

This award recognises groups or individuals that have made a real difference to the lives of young people in their community.

Runner-up:

Working mum Joan Martin has been dedicated to the Scouts movement for more than 25 years. On top of running Scout, Cub and Beaver packs at Seaton Scout Group, she also acts as district commissioner for Workington. Having started out on a few hours a week, she now spends more time volunteering than she has for herself. But she still manages to juggle being a mum, working and sorting out the Scouts’ hefty paperwork.

Winner:

Distington Club for Young People has been serving the people of Workington for more than 60 years. Opened in 1947 as Distington Boys Club, it relies on a bank of hardworking volunteers to keep its services going. More than 85 per cent of young people in the area are members, with access to fun, safe activities that keep them off the streets. The group meet regularly to talk about crime, safety and antisocial behaviour and find ways of tackling any problems.
