Green-fingered pensioners in Dalston, near Carlisle have transformed their little patch of lawn into a garden for the whole community. The residents at Barras House retirement home have been tending their garden for years, to the delight of their fellow villagers. Around 20 people take part in the project,also holding regular fundraising events. The garden is divided into sections based on different themes, including a sensory area, memorial garden, Carlisle United supporters’ area and even a special raised flower bed, to be seen from a housebound resident’s window.
Winner:
Deep in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness, volunteers have turned a piece of waste ground into a beautiful public garden. The derelict land on Marsh Street was previously a hangout for fly tippers, drug users and underage drinkers. But thanks to the efforts of residents, it has become a place the whole community can enjoy. The garden now includes a children’s play area, planters, a water feature and a barbecue. It was designed and planted by residents, with the help of children from local schools.
