Safer Communities Award

Skip main menu
Runner-up: Distington Rural Safety Group      Winner: Kendal Life Saving Club

This award goes to groups or individuals who have played their part in making Cumbria’s communities safer for everyone.

Runner-up:

Four years ago, the Workington village of Distington was a hotspot for crime and anti-social behaviour. Fed up of seeing their windows smashed, cars stolen and bins set on fire, residents decided to take positive action. By forming Distington Rural Safety Group, they started a process that changed the village for the better. In the past year, reports of anti-social behaviour in Distington have fallen by 24 per cent. Complaints of ‘rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour’ have dropped by 29 per cent, and ‘inappropriate use of public space’ by a staggering 100 per cent.

Winner:

Over the last 25 years, more than 700 young people have learned to save lives at Kendal Life Saving Club. Volunteers like Ron Starkey, from Kendal, have turned out every Friday to help teach children vital skills. To keep running costs to a minimum, they often have to buy their own equipment. Every young person that takes part in their ten-week courses goes through rigorous first aid training. The club provides South Lakeland with a regular supply of qualified life savers every year.
