Runner-up:
The Bench Project - Young people in Kirkby Lonsdale helped change their community for the better with a practical scheme this summer. Boys from Underley Hall School, a children’s residential home in Kirkby Lonsdale, started The Bench Project in June 2008. They applied their woodworking skills to renovate three broken benches in a busy recreational area. They measured, prepared and fitted oak slats to the benches, replacing the old ones which were rotten and split.

Your last year of school is always a busy time – coursework, revision and sleepless nights can take their toll. But 16-year-old Naomi Hewer, from Workington, still finds time every week to dedicate to her community. A youth volunteer at the Distington Club for Young People, she’s ready to help out in any way she can. Naomi’s duties range from mentoring younger children to fundraising and securing grants. At club planning meetings, she provides vital inside knowledge of young people’s needs.
