Find out about the Chairman

Cllr John Bell

I consider being elected as chairman of Cumbria County Council to be both an honour and a privilege.

I was born in 1943 and lived in the Newtown Rd area on the west side of Carlisle.  I attended  Ashley Infant and Senior Boys school, my primary education was at  Caldewgate Juniors School.

On leaving school I worked at the local Ford dealers where I served and completed my time as an apprentice  auto electrician. In 1965

I applied and was successful, in obtaining  a position with the then Cumberland Ambulance Service retiring from the Cumbria Ambulance Service in 2006, now of course the Northwest Ambulance Service. My time with the ambulance service was without doubt a most satisfying and rewarding part of my life.

In 1996  I was appointed a Justice of the Peace and sat on the Carlisle bench until retirement in 2013.

I have always had an interest in local affairs, I stood and was elected to the County Council in 2005, Carlisle City Council in 2007.  During my time on the council I have sat on the Looked after Children Panel, Local Committee,Lowther Street Trust a charity for educational purposes,  C.R.A.S,H group, Licensing & Regulatory Panel, and represent the county council on the Henry Lonsdale Trust, for elderly care

This year my wife Ann and I celebrated our Golden Wedding. Family life plays is an important part of my life, particularly with our grandchildren, along with my interest in football, and my support of my local team Carlisle Utd  account's for most of my free time.
