There are six county council local committees in Cumbria. One within each of the district or borough council boundaries.  Each have powers to make decisions on a range of matters affecting their local area.

The local committees consist of County Councillors whose divisions lie within the committee's area. In some areas, representatives from district and parish councils also sit as members of the local committee.

Public participation at local committees is very much welcomed.  You can have your say by asking a question, presenting a petition, or leading a deputation about any of the matters for which the Local Committee is responsible.

These matters include:

  • Highways maintenance and improvements including road safety
  • Street lighting and traffic management; services for young people
  • School crossing patrols
  • Appointment of school governors
  • Public rights of way
  • Local economic initiatives and community development including Neighbourhood Forums
