Cumbria`s Challenge

Skip main menu

In many places in Cumbria the quality of life is outstanding - but others experience some of the worst levels of deprivation found anywhere in the country.

Whilst residents in both types of area may be equally satisfied with the services they receive, they experience real inequality in areas like educational attainment, crime and disorder, life expectancy and household income.

Cumbria County Council is passionate about making a difference. This council plan sets out what we want to achieve so that everyone in our organisation is clear about how they can help.

Our population
Cumbria's population is ageing as the proportion of older adults increases and younger people pursue their education and careers outside the country.
Our homes
More affordable homes are needed in Cumbria especially in and around the Lake District National Park.
Our economy
Our economy has lagged behind the rest of the UK, but we do have natural assets which are the basis of our tourism sector - and we are an international centre for nuclear and energy technologies.
Our transport
In a large, predominantly rural county, good transport infrastructure is vital to give people access to jobs and services.
Our environment
Cumbria boasts a world class environment and needs to match this with high environmental standards such as reducing the amount of waste going to landfill, and reducing our carbon footprint.
