Caring for older people in Cumbria

This 10 minute online film explores the different ways Cumbria County Council can help the county's growing population of older people maintain their independence for longer.  The film contrasts a typical Cumbria Care residential home, where residents share bathrooms and staff struggle to manoeuvre wheelchairs around cramped corridors and bedrooms, with the space and independence available in a nearby extra-care housing facility.

Please be aware both files are quite large and therefore download time may vary.  For users with Windows Media Player select the Media Player option, for all other formats select Quicktime.

Skate Park

The idea for Carlisle’s first skate park originated from a consultation with young people in Carlisle who said they would like Skate Park facilities in the city.  Now, 2 years later, the Skate Park has become a reality, largely thanks to the efforts of the young people themselves.  Watch the Skate park video to find out more:

Putting People in Control

The freedom to enjoy an active life and have all the chances that society offers is something that many people take for granted. But for people with learning disabilities participating in their community as fully as they can is a right they have only just started to enjoy. Giving people the means to get the best out of life regardless of their disability is at the heart of Cumbria County Council’s policy. That means a package of services and opportunities tailored to the particular needs of each individual.
