Summary and Overview

Cumbria County Council Elections on Thursday 4 June 2009 returned the following political composition and membership:-

All 84 seats were contested

Conservative 38 members (+6)
Labour 24 members (-15)
Liberal Democrat 16 members (+6)
Independent 5 members (+2)
People's Party 1 member (+1)

NB - No overall majority

There were 43 County Councillors re-elected.  41 new County Councillors were elected.  A total of 21 County Councillors were not returned.  There were 20 County Councillors that did not stand for re-election.  Overall election turnout was 39.6%.

Representatives of the County Council and the six District Councils will be meeting shortly to monitor and evaluate the County Council election planning arrangements, and to identify any suggested improvements for 2013.
