Severe Weather

The greatest risks identified in Cumbria relate to those around sever weather and a specific consequence of this, namely flooding.

Severe weather may include the following:

  • Severe gales
  • Heavy rain
  • Dense fog
  • Thunderstorms and lightening
  • Drought

The Met Office is the national meteorological service for the United Kingdom and has a vital role in public safety. They warn the community of severe or hazardous weather which has the potential to cause danger to life or widespread disruption of communications or transport through the National Severe Weather Warning Service (external link)

Flooding: 

Around 5 million people, in 2 million properties, live in flood risk areas in England and Wales. The Environment Agency has an important role in warning people about the risk of flooding, and in reducing the likelihood of flooding from rivers and the sea.
