Crime

This section features details of crime and fear of crime in Cumbria and its districts. Below you will find a briefing which gives an overview of crime in Cumbria and its districts, the North West and in England and Wales.

British Crime Survey (BCS)

The British Crime Survey is an important source of information about the levels of crime and public attitudes to crime and other Home Office issues. The results play an important role in informing Home Office policy.

The survey is carried out on an annual basis.   It measures the amount of crime in England and Wales by asking people about crimes they have experienced and which they may not have officially reported. Therefore this is an important alternative to police records.

In addition to the BCS, the Home Office will now make available National Statistics supplementary bulletins.  These supplementary bulletins will report on additional analysis which isn't included in the annual British Crime Survey.

To find out more about the annual survey or to access the first two supplementary reports, please follow the links below.

Cumbria Constabulary - Crime and Disorder Profiles

Cumbria Constabulary produce Crime and Disorder profiles which are available at county, district and ward level.  These profiles provide a general overview of particular areas in Cumbria in terms of levels of Crime and Disorder as well as socio-economic information.

Police Performance Assessments 2006-07

The Home Office have produced their third annual publication of police performance assessments covering 2006-07.

The assessment includes data from the British Crime Survey, recorded crime indicators, measures of sanction detection rates and the proportion of offences being brought to justice.

Crime overall continues to fall.  However, the fear of crime remains an issue.  To find out more and to to find out how Cumbria are performing you can view the document below.
