Following a recent review of the Windermere Ferry service we are now recruiting to new positions that reflect the very unique service offered by this facility.

This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a new team dedicated to providing the highest standard of customer service on The Ferry, known locally as "The Mallard", which runs between Bowness and Hawkshead.

Ferry Host 4 x full time posts

Ferry Host 4 x part time posts

All staff will be provided with the very best training and be joining the wider Highways Operations team maintaining the Cumbrian road network.


Both Full-Time and Part-Time roles will be working a shift rota. To cover the Ferry operating hours there will be an "Early Shift" and a "Back Shift" both Monday to Friday and at Weekends.

Since developing our Highways Strategy (PDF) we have focussed on an asset management approach. This includes working with external providers to innovate and push the boundaries of current practice.

See our trials of the Bridge Cat, a unique new vehicle that will transform how we inspect bridges, meaning fewer delays following floods.

 

We have recently held a key event to bring all the Highways Service together for a focus on Health, Safety & Wellbeing. This event focussed on the reason why Near Miss reporting is so essential and that every member of the team needs to take responsibility for ensuring we work safely.

And then there is the routine maintenance work. Again Cumbria has all the challenges and opportunities to provide the experience and challenge for anyone looking to develop their career.

Since late 2015 the county council has been working closely with the Department for Transport to ensure the impacts on the county network following Storm Desmond are appropriately funded, investigated and resilient solutions implemented.

Hall Beck Bridge repair

The Infrastructure Recovery Programme is not just about bridges though and includes significant investment in carriageway works. This includes the well documented restoration and reinstatement of the A591 through then central Lakes.

This work was carried out with the support of Highways England who assisted on the delivery capacity for the works on this Cumbria County Council strategic road.

The Operations Unit provides the county council Highway Authority with the power to deliver the work needed to maintain and improve the highway network. The range of works undertaken covers drainage, kerbing, footways, signs, hedges, grass cutting, trees and of course carriageway patching and repairs. 

In addition to all this regular work the service responds to emergencies like flooding, major accidents and storms providing a 24/7 response. The service is also unique to other contractors in providing the winter maintenance work through gritting, ploughing and major snow clearance.
