Heritage & History

Curious to find out more about your family history?  Your house?  Your town or village?  Your local history?

You can explore the wide range of museums and important historic sites within Cumbria and discover for yourself the roots of the county.  From Hadrian's Wall to the border Reivers, Cumbria has a rich history to uncover.

The County Council also has a Historic Environment Service responsible for maintaining records and interpreting sites and monuments.  The County's Historic Environment Service is augmented by archaeologists working for the Lake District National Park and the National Trust.  Follow the link to Conservation on the left hand side of this page.

There are also more than 50 museums in Cumbria, covering a wide range of subject matter and spread across all parts of the county.  Full details of the museums in Cumbria can be found at Culture24, see the link below.

Cumbria Archive Service has Record Offices in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven and can help you discover the answers to many of your questions!

It cares for parish registers, other church records, wills, electoral registers, maps and plans, poor law records, title deeds, and photographs.  The archives of many families, businesses, local authorities, solicitors, societies and schools are also deposited in its Record Offices.  See the link to Libraries and Archives on the left hand side of this page.
