The Cumbria Countryside Access Strategy

Ever had any ideas how to improve rights of way or countryside access? Tell us what you think!

We’re working with the Lake District National Park Authority and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority to produce a ‘Rights of Way Improvement Plan’ for Cumbria. This will contain a list of actions aimed at improving access to the countryside for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and people with limited mobility.

If you want to know more about the Rights of Way Improvement Plan, read our Questions and Answers Page.

What are we looking for?

Any suggestions to improve access to the countryside. We want to make the network of footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways, byways, cycle tracks and permissive paths fit for modern day use. We will also consider any ideas that encourage people to enjoy and understand the countryside.

Can you think of:

  • New routes for walkers, cyclists, horse riders or people with limited mobility?
  • Footpaths, bridleways or cycleways that are needed to avoid busy roads?
  • Circular routes close to where people live, to encourage healthy exercise?
  • Dead-end routes that need extending, or routes with varying rights that need upgrading?
  • Services that would enable people to know where to go and what to do?

For other ideas, take a look at our Questions and Answers page.

What do you think?

If you have any specific ideas for projects that you’d like to see in the Plan, with particular locations in mind, let us know by downloading and filling out the Suggestions and Actions Form and either email your form to the email address below, or print it out and send it to the postal address.

The deadline for suggestions is 28 February 2006.

We will not be able to reply to you individually, but every suggestion will be considered for inclusion in the draft Plan, which will be published for consultation in 2006.
