Julia Donaldson

Julia grew up in a tall Victorian London house with her extended family.  As children she and her sister Mary enjoyed creating imaginary characters and staging performances for the family.  On her 5th birthday Julia was given a poetry book, which she loved.  She decided then that she would like to be a poet. Julia studied French and Drama at Bristol University where she met her husband Malcolm.  She initially had a career in singing and song writing for children’s television.  One of these songs became her first book published in 1993, ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’.   Later Julia wrote ‘The Gruffalo’ which became her breakthrough book.  She enjoys writing in verse finding it easier than not.
Julia’s novel ‘The Giants and the Joneses’ is going to be made in to a film by the team who made the Harry Potter films.
When not writing, Julia performs at book festivals and theatre events encouraging children in the audience to join in with the stories and sing the songs.
In her free time Julia likes to cycle, walk and play the piano.  Her favourite book of the many she has written is ‘The Snail and the Whale’
