May Author of the Month

Sophie McKenzie

Sophie McKenzie was born and brought up in London, where she still lives. An ex-journalist and freelance copywriter, Sophie now writes for as much of the week as she can but also earns a living as an editor, a creative writing teacher and through school visits.

Most of her spare time is spent seeing friends, running, listening to music at home and also live music, and playing football with her son. Sophie actually plays a lot of music when she writes – sometimes just to create or reflect the mood of the story, or at other times because a particular track seems to sum up a scene or character.

Sophie's first novel, the teen thriller called Girl, Missing won the older category in the Red House Children's Book Award 2007, the Bolton Book Award 2007, the Richard & Judy Children’s Book 12+ Award and the Manchester Book Award 2008.
