Homework Help and Information

A selection of internet sites devoted to reading and finding information. This is a list of sites that young people's librarians have liked and found useful. However, we must emphasise that we have no control over the content of the pages that these links go to.

• Encarta - An on-line version of the Encarta encyclopedia - you can search the encyclopedia, dictionary, and atlas.
• Channel 4 - A Channel 4 education site for 7-11 year olds. This has 500 interactive games plus an excellent dictionary, thesaurus and world atlas.
• B J Pinchbeck, a 13 year old American boy, and his dad suggest 625 links to sites that could help you with your homework.

Animals, Nature and the Environment

• Natural History Museum - Information on museum events and activities plus interactive on-line exhibits.
• RSPCA - Information about the work of the RSPCA
• The Meteorological Office - Visit the Met Office web site for up to date weather information and satellite views of the UK and the world.
• NASA - A fun site where you can find out about the space programme, with lots of activities to join in.
• Xpeditions - from National Geographic. The site gives access to satellite pictures of hurricanes as well as loads of links to other great geography sites.
• CIA Factbook - Information about the countries of the world - including flags, language and currency.

Books and Reading

• Harry Potter - Information about J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter books. Includes a glossary of terms used and a Howlers section of messages sent by fans.
• Roald Dahl - Information about Roald Dahl. Games, clips and ideas.
• Go4it -Find out about your favourite books and authors and be the first to learn what is coming out next. Write your own reviews and read other peoples. There are also competitions, jokes, cinema news and much more
• Cool Reads - Books for 10-15 year old readers by 10-15 year old reviewers.
• Mrs Mad - Tell Mrs Mad about your interests and she will suggest books you might enjoy. You can also tell her about your favourite books and play some games.
• Reviews - On-line reviews of children's books - all ages
• Barrington Stoke - A fun and interesting site from Barrington Stoke - publishers of books for children with reading difficulties - including activities, reviews, competitions and information for parents.

Entertainment

• Squigly's Playhouse. Games, colour-ins, word searches, puzzles and lots of other activities
• Interactive games - A really cool site with over 500 interactive games for all ages
• Spot -A great site for little ones. Interactive educational games and delightful pictures

Government

• Number 10 Downing Street - Take a tour around No. 10 Downing Street and find out about the Prime Minister, The Cabinet, and their policies. There are lots of interesting activities for you to try.
• Houses of Parliament - Find out how the Houses of Parliament work.
• The Royal Family - Find out about the Royal Family. You can also find information about previous Kings and Queens

History

• Virtual Victorians - Find out about the daily life of the Victorians, and see some Victorian photographs and objects.
• HMS Victory - Take a virtual tour of HMS Victory to see pictures of all parts of the ship and find out about its history.
• BBC History. A general history site that you can search by topic, time and famous people. There are also lists of events relating to current BBC History programmes.

Science

• National Museum of Science and Industry. Access the web sites of the three leading science and industry museums in the country: The Science Museum, The National Railway Museum, and The National Museum of Photography, Film, and Television.

• Science Net - A searchable database of 3000 science questions.

Sport

• F.A.Premiership - All the latest information on the FA Premier League
• Soccer Net - A web site for football fanatics of all ages - includes all the latest news and scores.

Teenagers

• Youth Information. A national Youth Agency website with information of issues such as education, employment and health for young people
• Connexions - giving advice, guidance and support services for all young people aged 13 - 19. There are also links to other web sites of use to young people.
